Moroccan Darija Proverbs

Darija proverbs, concise expressions of values or guidance, traditionally passed down orally, are facing decline. Without a comprehensive written record, their preservation is at risk, potentially leading to a loss of Moroccan cultural heritage. This project is my solution to help generate an archive for preservation purposes, increase recognition and exposure to Darija proverbs, and create opportunities for continued use and transmission both online and offline. It is comprised of a website to host a proverb archive as well as provide the digital access necessary for today’s communication and other online options, tied to an illustrated book of twelve proverbs.

The Concept

The project caters specifically to Moroccan audiences, and thus highlights distinctive Moroccan elements, with a focus on recognizable features like Moroccan doorways and Zellij mosaic. All this with a color palette of warm and cool tones mostly blues and oranges that complement each other. The shape of the book was based on the Moroccan doorway, symbolically framing the illustrations. The goal of the book is to facilitate shared learning experiences and discussions of proverbs among families.
